Good advice about healthy eating that I read in a...
Don’t think of it as a diet.
I read this all the time and I think it’s sort of trite, but, like all cliches there is some truth there. For me, if I can’t have pizza on the regs or have to stop drinking Coke, then it’s a diet. But there are so many negative connotations to the word “diet”: that it’s restrictive, that it has to be difficult, that food...

Create Your Plate →
Focus on filling your plate with non-starchy vegetables and having smaller portions of starchy foods and meats. You don’t need any special tools or have to do any counting. It’s simple and effective — draw an imaginary line on your plate, select your foods, and enjoy your meal! You may have heard of this as the “Plate Method.” Once you’ve changed your portion sizes, you can work on making...

Substitute Vodka for Febreze!?
Having not done my laundry for 3 weeks, this hint is super relevant in my current life. :-)

Vodka kills odor-causing bacteria, but doesn’t leave a scent when dry.

"Buying organic"
Last night was my first night in my new digs and I did a little recon in the kitchen. My hope is that the new roomie and I will have similar tastes and we can share some of the cost of groceries. From what I can tell, our tastes are similar, but the roomie is really into “buying organic,” I think. She has organic jam, organic tea, organic pasta, yadda yadda yadda.
In any case, a lot...

little things make a big difference
I hate wearing socks. Not because I hate the feeling of wearing socks, but because I hate the task of finding matching socks. So, if it’s warm enough, I skip the socks and go straight for the flip flops just out of convenience.
So, tonight I took the time to match all of my clean socks and put them together. I know it’ll make me feel better when I’m deciding about my footwear...

Michael Pollan's 7 Rules for Eating
1. Don’t eat anything your great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food. “When you pick up that box of portable yogurt tubes, or eat something with 15 ingredients you can’t pronounce, ask yourself, “What are those things doing there?” Pollan says.
2. Don’t eat anything with more than five ingredients, or ingredients you can’t pronounce.
3. Stay out of...
My food personality is "Fast and Fresh"!
Take advantage of the time you spend cooking on the weekends by cooking larger quantities and freezing some for later. In addition to our double duty meals try these tips:
Browning ground meat for dinner? Do extra, to use in tacos later in the week.
Baking chicken breasts? Cook two more, and then cut up later for stir-fry with vegetables and...
I’m officially moving into my first real apartment on my own in a month and I’m excited and nervous. In anticipation, I’ve created this blog as a repository for the tips, tricks, hints, and just plain good advice I find on the web about cooking, shopping, saving money, being healthy, and what-have-you.
Moving in May signifies an important shift in my life. I’ve been...
